Argentina General Information

Population:
Approximately 40 million.

Capital:
The first settlement of Buenos Aires was founded in 1536 by the Spanish aristocrat Pedro de Mendoza. However, this first attempt failed mostly due to bad organization and a lack of agricultural know-how. A second, and successful, attempt was made by Juan de Garay in 1580. Today the population is approximately 13 million.

Official languages:
Spanish. There are also 15 indigenous languages spoken around the country, as well as some German and a small amount of Welsh.

Principal Exports:
Agriculture, food processing, motor vehicles, consumer durables, textiles, chemicals and petrochemicals, printing, metallurgy and steel.

Political Geography:
23 provinces and 1 autonomous city: Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires Federal Capital, Catamarca, Chaco, Chubut, Cordoba, Corrientes, Entre Rios, Formosa, Jujuy, La Pampa, La Rioja, Mendoza, Misiones, Neuquen, Rio Negro, Salta, San Juan, San Luis, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, Tierra del Fuego - The Antarctic and South Atlantic Islands, Tucuman.
Festivals

Most holidays in Argentina commemorate historical events or the death of some of their national heroes. There is the odd parade, and in some of the northern villages, such as Tilcara, Easter is celebrated with traditional music bands and street parties. Many holidays have flexible dates in order to make three day weekends. Below are the official dates:

  • January 1st - New Year's Day
  • March 24th - Memorial Day (Anniversary of 1976 coup d'etat)
  • March or April - Good Friday and Easter
  • April 2nd - Malvinas Day (Tribute to the fallen in the Falklands/Malvinas War)
  • May 1st - Labor Day
  • May 25th - Anniversary of the First Independent Government in Buenos Aires
  • June 20th - National Flag Day
  • July 9th - National Independence Day
  • August 17th - Anniversary of the death of General Jose de San Martin.
  • October 12th - Columbus Day
  • December 8th - Immaculate Conception Day
  • December 25th - Christmas Day
