Sting, Bono & McCartney invited to play Machu Picchu

2011 marks the centenary year of Machu Picchu’s rediscovery by North American explorer Hiram Bingham, and in Peru plans are fully underway for the 100th anniversary July 7th celebrations.

In keeping with the significance of this milestone anniversary for Machu Picchu, the event promises to be on a grand scale. World famous veteran musicians, ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, U2 front-man Bono and ex-singer of The Police, Sting, have all been invited to Peru to perform, and planning talks are underway.

Sting is particularly interested in coming to Peru, and will be visiting Machu Picchu in February, following his Lima concert, to discuss logistics. There are obviously certain restrictions related to holding such a big event at a world heritage site, so planning is paramount. The possibility of an acoustic concert is said to be being discussed.

Whatever the outcome, we’re sure that Peru will put on a great show, and that we won't want to miss it! Check back for updates and take a look at a few of our Machu Picchu & Peru tours here.
